Soapstone Carving
Soapstone is a naturally soft stone that has been carved for centuries. It can be shaped easily using hand tools to a very high level of detail.
This class will take students through the design and carving process using traditional hand tools to create one small and one larger stone art piece. Students will need to wear clothes that are ok to get dusty, although we will do our best to minimise dust. Dust masks will be provided.
I hope you will join me this term for a stone carving experience!
Age Suitability: 8+ yrs of age
Group Size: 8 maximum
Child Requirements: Clothes that can get a little dusty!
Tutor: Ben Cole-Piper - While living in Canada I spent some time teaching soapstone carving classes for an art gallery and learning from some talented artists. The carving studio was next door to the gallery in a hotel in Whistler. I had the opportunity to teach groups, families and people of all ages, guiding them through the design and carving process. Having an art and design background, I thoroughly enjoyed working with stone as a medium and eventually displayed some of my own work in the gallery.
